Chicago Hands Indiana a Loss in Home Opener

Indianapolis, Ind., — The Indiana Fever suffered their first loss on Youth Sports Day in their 2018 season opener against the Chicago Sky.

After a solid first half of ball movement and keeping the Sky at bay with team defense, the Fever only trailed by two, 36-34, at the half.

The two Mitchell’s, Kelsey and Tiffany lit it up from beyond the arc drilling back-to-back triples midway through the second. Rookie Victoria Vivians also knocked down a three-point basket to make her league debut in a Fever uniform. However, Chicago was able to hold their own making a run on the Fever in the second half.

Despite picking up two early fouls, Stefanie Dolson made her presence felt finishing with 11 points, seven rebounds, and five assist. The Sky shot 49.2% from the field and were able to get easy buckets in transition, leading to an 82-64 victory over Indiana. Allie Quigley led Chicago with 19 points, while rookie Diamond DeShields had a strong opening with 18 points and eight rebounds.

The Fever struggled on the boards this afternoon, but were able to force 12 Sky turnovers. Veteran Candice Dupree led the Fever in scoring and rebounding with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Erica Wheeler and Tiffany Mitchell added 13 and 11 points, respectively.

With the first game of the season complete, the Fever look to put this one behind them as they prepare for a back to back taking on the Washington Mystics at 1:00 PM ET tomorrow.

Chicago Sky Open 2018 Season Against Indiana Fever

Indianapolis, Ind., — The Indiana Fever host their season opener Saturday afternoon at 1 PM ET, in Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Youth Sports Day.

Veteran Candice Dupree will lead a new young roster of players as the Fever look to secure a win in their home opener against the Chicago Sky. The Fever have a solid group of returners with point guard Erica Wheeler at the helm and rookies Stephanie Mavunga, Kelsey Mitchell, and Victoria Vivians ready to make their debut.

The Chicago Sky will be without point guard Courtney Vandersloot as she wraps up international play, but have 2x Sixth Woman of the Year Allie Quigley, Stefanie Dolson, and Cheyenne Parker returning to help lead the squad.

Chicago Sky at Indiana Preview

Indianapolis, Ind., — The Indiana Fever prepare for their 2018 campaign in tomorrow’s WNBA preseason matchup against the Chicago Sky.

Gearing up for the leagues 22nd season, the Fever will host the Sky in one of their two preseason games. Tip-off is set for 12:30 PM ET in Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Indiana who posted a 9-25 overall record last season underwent big change as they picked up some key players to bring size, youth, and athleticism to the roster. With the loss of guard Briann January (Phoenix), four-year pro Erica Wheeler returns as the likely starter after a solid 2017 season. Also returning are veterans Candice Dupree and Erlana Larkins. Newcomers Kelsey Mitchell, Stephanie Mavunga, and Victoria Vivians were a steal in this years draft class adding scoring prowess, size, and depth to the Fever. With 18 players on the training camp roster, fans and spectators eagerly await to see the final 12-man roster when the squad opens the season on May 19.

The Sky made their preseason debut against the Atlanta Dream Sunday, falling 78-61. Cheyenne Parker paced Chicago with 13 points and eight rebounds followed by Stefanie Dolson’s 10 points.
