Indianapolis, Ind., – The Seattle Storm (19-7) showed why they’re at the top of league standings with a 20-point win over Indiana (3-23) on Tuesday night.
After the Storm went on an 8-0 run to start the game, Indiana’s veterans had an answer as Cappie Pondexter hit back to back buckets to get the Fever going. Candice Dupree would follow suit knocking down shots to keep Indiana close. However, Seattle would keep the pressure on as Jewell Loyd buried triple after triple to tally 13 points at the end of the first quarter.
Teammates Breanna Stewart and Natasha Howard would pick up where she left off in the second half, as Seattle got out in transition. Stewart and Howard scored all 25 of the Storm’s third quarter points working as a tandem to stretch out their lead. Indiana’s Kelsey Mitchell would provide bursts of scoring attacks to keep the Fever in it coming as close as 80-72 late in the game. But Seattle’s Sue Bird would nail a dagger three-pointer to silence Indiana as the Storm soared to victory. Bird would tally 11 points and 11 assists in the 92-72 win. Stewart would pace the Storm with 26 points and 10 rebounds, shooting a 75 percent clip from behind the arc. Natasha Howard would also add 16 points and nine rebounds as Seattle picked up the road win.
Kelsey Mitchell, who will be participating in Saturday’s All-Star Three Point Contest, finished with a 26 point performance to tie a season-high for Indiana. Dupree turned in a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Pondexter pitched in 10 points.
After the All-Star break, the Fever will face the Dallas Wings on August 2 at 7 PM ET.
