Indianapolis, Ind., – In Sunday evenings matchup against the Indiana Fever, the Phoenix Mercury notched 101 points led by Brittney Griner to pull off the road win.
Up 48-46 at halftime, the Indiana Fever looked strong and ready to continue their first half success headed into the third quarter. Veterans Candice Dupree and Cappie Pondexter came out shooting hot as they were able to find their shots in the flow of the offense. As a team Indiana made a solid effort on the glass to win the rebounding battle 35-33. However, the Fever had no answer for Baylor alum, Brittney Griner as she had her way in the paint getting bucket after bucket. Griner would tally 36 points and 12 rebounds to earn her thirty-second career double-double.
Trailing just seven points to start the final period, Indiana’s Tiffany Mitchell came off the bench to give the Fever a late push, coming away with three steals. In the end, the Mercury’s trio of Griner, Diana Taurasi, and DeWanna Bonner would prove too much for the Fever to handle as Phoenix (15-8) cruised to victory, 101-82.
Dupree would finish with a season-high 23 points, while Cappie Pondexter also recorded a season-high of 17 points. Mitchell would add 12 points in Indiana’s loss. Taurasi and Bonner finished with 22 and 14 points, respectively for Phoenix.
Indiana (2-20) will return to the hardwood Wednesday, July 18 at Minnesota for a 1 PM ET tip-off on NBA TV.
