Indianapolis, Ind., – The Indiana Fever (0-2) remain winless on the season as they fell to the Washington Mystics, 82-75 on Sunday.
Natalie Achonwa put up career highs in both points and rebounds scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 boards for Indiana. Trailing 61-51 to start the fourth, Indiana managed to come within six later on, but every time the Fever seemed to be closing in Kristi Toliver would be there to knock down a triple to stretch out the Mystics’ lead. Toliver hit four 3-pointers to finish with 16 points while Elena Delle Donne added 13 points and seven assists.
Candice Dupree finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Fever, while Kelsey Mitchell poured in 16 points. The Fever look to secure their first win at home on Tuesday in a matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks.
In a rematch of last years WNBA Finals, the Sparks (1-0) hung on to win their season opener at Minnesota with a last second shot to put them on top 77-76. Despite being without Candice Parker, the team got the job done as the queen of buzzer beaters, Chelsea Gray hit the game winner in the lane finishing with 18 points, eight assists, and six steals. Odyssey Sims led the Sparks with 21 points and Nneka Ogwumike added 19 points.
