Jackson, Tenn., — Like any rivalry, stakes are bound to be high with bragging rights on the line. However, in Saturday afternoons SIAC #RivalryWeek match-up between the LeMoyne-Owen College Magicians and the Lane College Dragons, the atmosphere was like no other.
After Lane’s seniors were honored before tip-off, the Dragons opened the game with a 3-point basket by senior Jade Patrick to make it known that the Dragons meant business. Unbothered by the excitement of the fans, LeMoyne-Owen settled in to take their first lead of the night, off a dunk by guard Martez Briggs. Shooting 48 percent from the field and 72 percent from the charity stripe, the Magicians took a 38-31 advantage at the half.
Throughout the second half both teams played each other tight in a game that saw two lead changes and six ties. After a clutch slam dunk by freshman forward Jaquan Lawrence, Briggs split a pair at the line as the Magicians led by five with just under two minutes to play. Despite forcing 17 turnovers in which LOC scored 13 points off of Lane’s mistakes, the Dragons had an 18-7 advantage on second chance points and shot 40 percent from behind the arc, as Lane (12-10, 10-7) edged out the Magicians 74-72.
Tevyn Roberts led the Dragons in scoring with 15 points, while Kendarius Ash grabbed 17 rebounds to go with 14 points and eight assists.
Martez Briggs would finish with a game-high 19 points, six rebounds, and five steals for LOC, followed by Lawrence with 18 points and six rebounds. Bronx native, Jaequan Brown joined the double-digit club adding 14 points in a tough loss.
LeMoyne-Owen (9-15, 5-12 SIAC) will have another chance to take down their rival on Saturday (Feb. 17) in Bruce/Johnson Hall for senior night.
In another road test, the Magicians travel to Rust College for a doubleheader with the women on Thursday, Feb. 15. Tip-off is at 7:30 PM.
