Memphis, Tenn., — “Don’t Call It A Comeback!” It’s Rivalry Week in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and LeMoyne-Owen is ready for the Knockout win at Lane.
The LeMoyne-Owen College (LOC) Lady Magicians womens basketball team trailed 40-25 at the half in Monday nights home game against SIAC opponent Tuskegee University (TU).
Shooting just 25 percent from the field compared to TU’s 48 percent, LeMoyne-Owen would have to make some adjustments if they were going to stay alive in this game. Sure enough, LOC did just that stepping up their defense to force 24 Golden Tiger turnovers and scoring 24 points as a result of those mistakes. Shooting an improved 46.7% from the field in the second half, the Lady Magicians fought their way back into the game holding TU to just six points in the third quarter.
LOC would go on to outscore the Golden Tigers 24-14 in the final period to take the win, 67-60. The Lady Magicians won the battle of the boards 43-42, and capitalized on their second chance points over Tuskegee.
Taylor Miller paced the Golden Tigers with 14 points, followed by Alexus Shirrells with 10 points and four steals.
Tenesha Wright finished with a double-double scoring 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for LeMoyne-Owen. Lefty, Corlisha Howard gave the Lady Magicians a boost in the second half adding 14 points including two big 3-point shots late in the game. Taylor Johnson-Prackett kept up her effort on the glass with a game-high 14 rebounds, and was just shy of joining Wright with a double-double of her own, tallying nine points. Ty Broadwater also recorded a personal best, protecting the paint with six rejections to go with six points, and five rebounds.
LeMoyne-Owen (12-9, 9-6 SIAC) heads to Lane College (5-18, 5-9 SIAC) in Jackson, TN, next as Rivalry Week in the SIAC is underway. Saturday’s match-up is a doubleheader with the women tipping at 2:00 PM CST, and the men at 4:00 PM.
