Memphis, Tenn., — Hard nose defense played a key role in the first half of Saturday’s match-up for LOC’s Lady Magicians.
The LeMoyne-Owen College hosted the Miles College (MC) Lady Bears in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play for their second and final contest of the regular season. A slow start for both teams, the Lady Magicians finally got going offensively after a 3-point basket by Ty Broadwater, the forward out of Rochester, NY.
From there the Lady Magicians would use their defensive pressure to get stops that would lead to good things on offense, as LOC held the advantage at the break, 31-15.
While LeMoyne-Owen shot 33 percent from the field, the energy and effort on defense gave LOC an edge as they came away with deflections and nine steals off of Miles’ mistakes. To start the second quarter, the Lady Magicians went on an 11-0 run as Miles went scoreless with just over 4:00 minutes left in the half. Raiana Johnson would make the layup for Miles to end their dry spurt, as the Lady Bears fought to stay in the game.
MC (6-13, 3-8 SIAC) would come within striking distance after a made jumper by Taylor Terry to cut the lead to 55-45, with three minutes remaining, but come up short as LOC finished with a final score of 62-54. Taylor Terry finished with 13 points and eight rebounds for Miles, followed by Ashley McCrear with 11 points and six rebounds.
Dana Gettis led all scorers with 21 points, while Courtney Banks tallied nine points and seven rebounds. Taylor Johnson-Prackett had a solid performance grabbing a game-high of 14 rebounds and three blocks to go with six points. Broadwater and Tenesha Wright, also finished with six points on the evening.
With the win, LeMoyne-Owen (11-9, 8-6 SIAC) completes a perfect 2-0 sweep of the Golden Bears in this seasons series. Catch the Lady Magicians back on their home floor Monday, Feb. 5 against Tuskegee University. Tip-off is at 5:30 PM EST.
