Memphis, Tenn., — Both Magicians men’s and women’s basketball teams returned to action in the SIAC on Friday night against the Albany State University Golden Rams.
The LeMoyne-Owen Lady Magicians came out strong against the Lady Rams as both teams jockeyed for position in a close match-up. Throughout the first half, neither team could really break away as defensive stops were key to this energy intensive game.
Just before the break Dana Gettis came away with the steal for a quick two points on the other end to put LOC up one, 29-28 at halftime. Albany State would answer in the second half taking a 13 point lead midway through the third quarter (44-31). Regrouping, the Lady Magicians edged their way back in knotting the game up at 59-all with 4:57 left to go.
LOC shot 36% from the field (22-61) and 36% from three (9-25), while going 14 of 23 (61%) from the charity stripe. In the end it came down to free-throws and the Lady Rams cashed out at the line (22-29, 76%) to come away with the victory, 74-67. Box score.
ASU had four players reach double figures, with Achanti Layfield leading the Lady Rams with 16 points. LeMoyne’s Gettis led all scorers with 23 points.
