Memphis, Tenn., — The Magicians of LeMoyne-Owen College return from the holiday break with back-to-back action in SIAC play to close out the year.
LOC will face conference opponent Albany State University on Friday, Dec. 29, 2017, at Bruce/Johnson Hall before following up with Fort Valley State University on Saturday, Dec. 30.
On their visit to Paine College, the Lady Magicians (6-5, 3-2 SIAC) held the Lady Lions to 21 points in the first half as LOC cruised to a 75-56 victory, on Dec. 18. LeMoyne shot 42% from the field (24-57) and 69% from the charity stripe (27-39). Both PC and LeMoyne forced 23 turnovers and tallied 33 points from the bench, but LOC would notch 24 points off of the Lady Lions’ turnovers to lead by as much as 29 points late in the fourth. Paine was led in scoring by Briona Andrews and Zhane Green with 12 points each, while LOC’s Shantiera Miller topped all scorers with a game high 15 points. Guard Lamontazia Blair put up a double-double grabbing 10 boards and 13 points on the evening. Tenesha Wright also finished in double digits with 11 points for LOC and Shaynn Nance had a game high four steals to go with six points, four rebounds, and two assists.
The Lady Magicians host the Lady Golden Rams (7-8, 3-2 SIAC) of Albany State at 5:30 PM on Jerry C. Johnson Court Friday, Dec. 29, with the men immediately following in a conference doubleheader.
The Magicians fell 68-63 against Paine to move to 3-7 overall, and 0-5 in SIAC after battling from behind for most of the game. The Lions led by as much as 16 in the first half jumping out to a 24-8 lead with 12 minutes remaining. Refusing to go away easy, the Magicians mounted a come back in the second half cutting Paine’s lead to three twice within the last 10 seconds of the game. However, the Lions would hold on closing the game out at the free throw line for the victory. LeMoyne shot 42% from the field (22-53) and 56% from the FT-line (14-25). Babe Murphy led Paine in scoring with 22 points, as did LOC’s Rashawn Ellis. Aston Morton led the Magicians in rebounds with eight and finished with 14 points, while Anthony Green (8pts/2stl/2ast) and Demba Konate (4pts/2ast/2blk) each grabbed seven boards also.
The Magicians will battle the Golden Rams (0-12, 0-4 SIAC) as both teams look to secure their first conference victory. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
