The Lady Magicians (0-2) have had a slow start to the season, dropping two hard fought games in the Missouri Science & Tech Classic (Rolla, MO). With the majority of the exhibition games and preseason jitters out of the way, LOC continues to show tremendous promise as they work through a series of road games early on.
Leading the Lady Choctaws for three quarters of the game, LOC got out to a strong start defensively which led to good offense. Junior guard, Dana Gettis set the tone leading the Lady Magicians on 8-10 shooting with 19 points at the half.
The Lady Choctaws would have an answer, however in the second half, buckling down on the defensive end, holding Gettis to just three points. MC outscored LOC 18-10 in the third, and took their first lead (62-60) with just 8:17 left to play. Down 70-61 with less than five minutes to play, the Lady Magicians would work some ‘magic’ of their own to tie the ball game 77-all, on an ‘AND1’ play by LOC senior, Tenesha Wright. With (:30) left, MC regained the lead after a freethrow by junior Zan Ratcliffe, but Wright came up clutch scoring another bucket to put LOC back on top. 11 seconds to go, MC’s Ratcliffe knocks down the jumper (:05). The Lady Magicians, get off a contested shot, but come up short. MC Choctaws steal a win, 80-79, to go 2-0 on the season.
The Lady Magicians move to 0-3, on a tough loss. They’ll face Concordia College in Selma, AL, next. Box scores.
