In their final regular season meeting, the Phoenix Mercury (15-15) will host the Los Angeles Sparks (22-8) tonight, in hopes of avoiding a season series sweep by the Sparks.
The sixth place Mercury who have just four games left on the regular season schedule, are likely to make the playoffs despite suffering back to back blowouts at the hands of the No.3 Connecticut Sun, and the No. 1 Minnesota Lynx. Now facing the No. 2 ranked Sparks, the Mercury plan to bounce back with a W, in order to secure their playoff berth. In the 105-69 loss to Minnesota, the Mercury were led by Monique Currie with 14 points. Brittney Griner who returned to action Aug. 12 after knee and ankle injuries, finished with 9 points alongside Leilani Mitchell and Cayla George.
The visiting Sparks have won three straight games and are only 1½ games back from the top ranked Minnesota, who they’ll face-off against Sunday in the teams’ final regular season showdown. In Los Angeles’ most recent victory over San Antonio, Nneka Ogwumike led the Sparks with 22 points and 14 rebounds.
