The New York Liberty (17-12) head to Bankers Life Fieldhouse tonight to take on the Indiana Fever (9-21), after securing a berth to the playoffs on Sunday.
The Liberty won 70-61 Sunday, over the top ranked Minnesota Lynx. After a stellar week that saw New York win five games straight, including victories over the top three teams in the league, the Liberty are now fighting for that No. 4 seed in the playoffs against the Washington Mystics (17-12). The top four teams earn a first-round bye in the postseason. Battling for optimum position in postseason play, the Liberty look to finish the regular season strong behind the dominate game of Tina Charles. Charles was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the fifth time this season, and a record 26 times since joining the league back in 2010.
Indiana is headed in the wrong direction, unfortunately after dropping four games in a row–eliminating them from playoff contention; Not to mention the Fever lost yet another guard to injury. In the team’s record breaking loss on Friday against the Minnesota Lynx, the Fever were outscored 37-0 in the first half. They went on to be routed 111-52, making the 59-point margin the worst in WNBA history. This season will be the first time the franchise will not make the playoffs, after setting a league record of 12 straight postseason appearances. Indiana lost Briann January on Monday to a torn meniscus and is the third guard, joining Shenise Johnson and Tiffany Mitchell, to go out with season ending injuries. The Fever acquired rookie guard Jennie Simms from the Mystics to replace January for the remainder of the season.
Tonight, Indiana fights for pride and to avoid being swept in this season series by the Liberty. Tune in on WNBA League Pass at 7:00 p.m. ET.
