The New York Liberty (8-7) look to sweep the season series against the Phoenix Mercury (9-6) this evening at Talking Stick Resort Arena at 6 p.m. ET.
The Liberty managed to snap a three game losing streak Thursday, when they secured a 79-70 victory over the Seattle Storm. Tina Charles who is second in scoring in the league, had a solid performance in the road win dropping 29 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Her presence tonight is crucial in the paint if the Liberty hope to defeat the Mercury, and the league’s top scorer, Brittney Griner. Griner is averaging a WNBA-high 21.9 points per game, along with 8.1 rebounds per game. She has been instrumental in the Mercury’s two game win streak and will have a challenging match-up against Charles.
Phoenix looks to continue their streak with a win tonight as the Mercury honor forward Penny Taylor with her #13 jersey retirement after the game. Taylor played 10 seasons with the Mercury and retired as the franchise’s second all-time leading scorer behind Diana Taurasi. Throughout her career Taylor has been a three-time WNBA All-star, a two-time All-WNBA First Team selection, a three time Olympian, and one of only two players to play on all three Mercury championship teams.
